Cult British beauty brand, and a personal favourite of mine, Illamasqua, have just launched their first fragrance, the appropriately named Freak. According to Illamasqua, "Freak is a concoction of dangerously exotic unconventional flowers which Illamasqua has unashamedly blended together to celebrate the night".

The unisex fragrance features top notes of Black Davana, Opium Flower and Belladonna; heart notes of Poison Hemlock, Datura and Queen of the Night Blossom; base notes of Frankincense, Oud and Myrrh, all of which are as unusual and individual as the brand itself.

Recently the lineup was announced for next year's Soundwave festival. With epic headliners of System of a Down, Slipknot, Marilyn Manson, Machine Head, Lamb of God and Trivium it's not a festival for the musically faint-hearted. Other acts include The Used, A Day to Remember, Angels & Airwaves, Lostprophets, Devin Townsend Project, Unwritten Law, Dashboard Confessional, Thursday, Raised Fist, Mastodon, Underoath and Saves the Day.

The event will be held in Brisbane on Sat 25th Feb, Sydney on Sun 26th, Melbourne on Fri 2nd March, Adelaide on Sat 3rd and Perth on Mon 5th.

When I first moved to Melbourne I checked out a few foodie blogs to learn about the best restaurants I should try. While I haven't really ticked off many from my list yet, I finally got to try out Mexican favourite Mamasita recently. Unfortunately reservations can only be made for groups of 8-10, so I recommend getting there early. My friend and I went straight there after work on a Tuesday night, and as we left the line was out the door.

So the food. I have to admit my knowledge of Mexican food had previously almost always involved a Old El Paso kit of some sort, or a huge bowl of nachos at the local pub- not what you'll find at Mamasita. Mamasita is all about authentic and modern Mexican, not the Americanised version that myself and so many others are used to. We started off with their signature corn, which you apparently have to try- and I'm glad I did. I was warned that after trying it no other corn will ever taste the same and sadly this is true. Then we shared amaaazing chicken tostaditas, lamb quesadillas, garlic prawns and a super tasty side which our waiter recommended (and I've forgotten the name of). All washed down with a Mamasita margarita of course! Unfortunately I didn't take any photos as I get a bit embarrassed doing this at restaurants, so you'll just have to check it out for yourself.

On the shelf: Style edition

Hello my name is Sophie and I am addict. Addicting to buying books that is, specifically cute coffee table ones. I get a bit overexcited when I go into bookstores these days (can you imagine how I was in a $5 discount bookstore recently?!), and with an interest in nearly every section, bar sport and children, I can also go a bit overboard with the spending. I do find, however, that buying books lacks the same buyers remorse and guilt that comes with a lot of other purchases; I'm still excited when I get home to read through all of my purchases and they all look so cute on the shelf.

One of my recent trips to the bookstore included all of the four books above. The first I've shown above is Classy by Derek Blasberg, a fashion writer and man about town, which is a hilarious (and true) manual about how to be a modern lady, which seem to be increasingly rare to find these days.

Shoestring Chic by Kerrie Hess is a beautifully illustrated guide on how to be stylish on a budget and is full of great shopping tips. Kerrie's Parisian apartment was featured in a magazine I was reading recently, and while it doesn't seem like she's on a budget it certainly was chic. So chic in fact it made me actually cry with envy and text pictures of the pages to my mother.

Maggie Alderson "Australia's favourite fashion columnist" (according to the cover) is the author of the popular Good Weekend Style Notes column and her book Style Notes is a selection of columns from 2006 to 2010. I hadn't actually read any of her columns before (yes, I judged and purchased the book by its cover) but I am thoroughly enjoying her hilarious observations and discussions on fashion and style. As it's a collection of columns, it's perfect to read on the tram to and from work.

Finally, for those of you who don't know Fifi Lapin- you should. Fifi Lapin is an hare-ss and the most stylish rabbit around. Her blog follows her daily style choices, picked straight from the runway. Seriously though, check out the site and check out the book- so cute!

This is undoubtedly the busiest time of year for fashion; here in Australia, Spring Fashion weeks are popping up all around to showcase the new season collections in store, and overseas the International fashion weeks are in full bloom with designers showing beautiful new collections and trends which probably won't really hit our shores until this time next year.

As a firm believer in style, rather than fashion, whether you're heading along to your local fashion week shows or checking out the latest runway offerings, look for beautiful classical pieces and those that you know will suit your shape and personal style.

The first show I've checked out so far is 3.1 Phillip Lim, and I love the clean lines and fresh sorbet pastels. What do you think?

Last week Kiehl's strengthened their hero Ultra Facial range by launching a new oil free line. Iconic skincare brand Kiehl's has teamed up with equally iconic blogging powerhouse Scott Shuman, aka The Sartorialist for those who've had their heads under a rock for the last two years, to create a super chic (but also very manly!) Father's Day set. I'm hoping my dad doesn't read this too often because this is what I'm getting him this year!

The kit includes face wash, moisturiser, eye cream, lipbalm and scrub soap from Kiehl's Facial Fuel range and comes in a superbly designed and Italian made blue men's toiletry bag.

I Love My Muff?

Yes, you read the title correctly. It seems as though feminine hygiene products are often either shyed away from or used as an insulting term (one of my personal favourites for people on the tram), but the creators of I Love My Muff certaintly didn't beat around the nicely smelling bush when it came to naming their brand. And why should they? Their range is no different to other bath and body products.

Beauty review: Orly Pure Porcelain nailpolish

I'm loving the bright beauty trend at the moment, but most of the time I prefer soft, feminine neutral colours- which also means I don't need to think about matching my nails to my outfit which yes, I do.

Recently I tried out Orly's Pure Porcelain nailpolish, which was used on the models at Dion Lee's recent fashion week show. The bottle lid has a good grip top, and the polish goes on smoothly. The shade is beautiful, and would suit most skin tones- I definitely got a few compliments on it at work! It has a great glossy finish, but works best teamed with Orly's Bonder base coat and Glosser top coat.

National Whale Day 2011

Saturday 2nd July is National Whale Day in Australia. The day was launched in 2008 by IFAW as a way to celebrate whales as well as drawing attention to the threats that face whales today. I was recently travelling in Vietnam, and was pleased to learn from our guide that they not only respect whales but they are worshipped and mourned when found dead.

Eat Street 2011

Fashion and food are two of my great loves (if you hadn't guessed already), but unfortunately the two don't always have the best relationship. That's all about to change, however, on Tuesday 21st June.

Top Australian fashion designers and celebrity chefs are joining together to create a night of entertainment, food and designer goods at Melbourne's newest gourmet event- Eat Street. Eat Street will be held at the gorgeous Sofitel Hotel on Collins Street and feature mini marquees for over 50 restaurants, chef and wineries. All proceeds from the event will go towards the Australian Childhood Foundation, an organisation who work towards providing trauma counselling to help children recover from the devastating impact of abuse, neglect and family violence.

So where does the fashion come in? 10 leading designers- Willow, Sass and Bide, Fleur Wood, Mimco, Life with Bird, Alice McCall, Gwendolynne, Megan Park, Nicholas Morely and Jack Loder, have paired up with the top chefs, including Master Chef's George Calombaris, to create an apron to symbolise their signature dish, all of which will be auctioned off at the event.

"We've always loved the Cantonese kitchen and have been huge fans of Flower Drum over the years...The simplicity of Anthony's cooking acted as the catalyst for our clean approach to the Apron design... we chose to work with just one embellishment, the pearl, to represent the texture, colour & simplist approach of Anthony's beautiful 'pearl meat' dish", Sass and Bide on the The Flower Drum's Pearl Meat dish.

Man of the Day: Matt Wilson

What’s something that most people don’t know about you?

Only family and close friends know that I was in The Wiggles Movie when I was not even 8 years old. I’m pretty sure I’ve been keeping it a secret growing up thinking that I would cop a lot of ribbing from workmates if they knew it. But now getting older it’s only getting funnier and funnier!

What is your favourite style/outfit on a girl?

I can’t go past a maxi-dress. It’s actually one of my biggest attention grabbers. Don’t ask me how or why but I think every girl looks a million dollars in one!

Other than that any girl who looks effortlessly gorgeous is a standout for me. Hair out, minimal makeup and comfortable flats creates this vibe. Well that’s coming from a tradie with not much sense in style anyhow!

How would you describe your own style?

I’m like a bit of a cartoon character, I can be seen wearing the same looking outfits far too often! I have a little rule for myself , shorts with a shirt, Pants/jeans with a T-shirt or singlet. And now that winters coming on… I’m out of ideas!!

Tights as pants are like a liquid moulded outfit. Risky stuff!

What was your funniest/most memorable date?

Unfortunately the most memorable date for me was my worst date. I will never forget it.

When I was 17 I had a crush on this girl and thought the feeling was mutual. We had an awesome evening planned with the movies, dinner and a party on the agenda. I remember waiting at the movies for 2 hours for her to come. She never did, and the worst part was that every 30min she would send a text saying she would be there in 10min. It was a total lie.

What has been your most embarrassing moment?

I was doing an undie parade for aussieBum on the Kerri-anne show about 2 months ago. I had to strip down to reveal a new pair of swimmers when I pulled down too much and showed a little more than necessary….my face went red quicker than a crab in a pot.

Something that makes you laugh?

Dad jokes get me all the time. Scary to think that I’m loving them now….wait til I am a Dad!

Describe your perfect day.

Taking my dog for a run first thing in the morning before heading to work and getting a bit of building work done (to convince myself I’ve done something constructive for the day) then heading down to the river with friends on a hot day to go wakeboarding! Finishing it off with a few drinks around a fire by the water.

Why should people vote for you as Cleo’s Most Eligible Bachelor for 2011?

Apart from backing the underdog, this years criteria is about the everyday guy who is laidback, and nice to a girls mum. I reckon I fill that role just right!

After my cousin came to stay over the holidays she left me the book "One Day" by David Nicholls. It follows the lives of Dexter and Emma who spend their graduation night together on the 15th July, 1988. The book then visits the characters on that day every year to see where they're at with their lives. It's a wonderful story with beautifully accurate portrayals of everyday life and relationships, and an ending that took me by surprise. It comes out as a film later this year, so get in quick to read it beforehand!

Qee Designer Toy Exhibition at Chadstone

Recently I blogged about the Qee Designer Toy exhibition, which was held at Chadstone as part of the L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival. Life sized blank Qees were given to designers such as Alannah Hill, Peter Alexander and Leona Edminston and auctioned off online, with all of the proceeds going to the designer's charity of choice.

Over $16,000 was raised from the event, with the Qee designed by Jack London being the most popular and selling for over $3,000.

Chanel animating- why did I not find this sooner?

Eat: Gnocchi Primavera

Ingredients:

500g packet gnocchi
100g frozen peas
1 broccoli head, cut into small florets
1 zucchini, chopped into batons
1 bunch asparagus, halved
100g snow peas, topped and tailed
1/4 cup basil pesto
300ml light thick cream
Parmesan, to serve

Cook the gnocchi in boiling, slighted salted water for a minute. Add peas, broccoli, zucchini, asparagus and snow peas and cook until gnocci is tender is vegetables are crisp, then drain.
On a low heat, stir the pesto and cream in a seperate pan until heated, then add the gnocchi and vegetables and mix.
Top with parmesan to serve, easy!

Tom Ford: A Stylish Man

I seem to be having a little Tom Ford obsession at the moment. He is arguably one of the most stylish men ever, and is so incredibly talented. He has the midas touch with everything he creates, and his luxurious beauty range is no exception. His vision for Tom Ford beauty is for it "to be the first true luxury brand of the 21st century", and while the Chanels, Diors and Guerlains of the beauty world may disagree with this statement, his brand is without a doubt, and at the very least, up there with the best.

As my favourite flowers are orchids and my favourite colour is black, this was the fragrance I was most excited to try. The inspiration for Black Orchid comes from his attraction to the flower, "to me, it is the perfect flower...luxurious, elegant, pure, sophisticated. The only problem was it didn't exist. For centuries, orchid specialists have been searching for a black orchid but it took an expert and a very patient grower in California to create the elegant hybrid that is now recognised as the only true black orchid from nature." The scent contains top notes of black truffle, ylang ylang, bergamont and blackcurrant, which is balanced by lotus wood, patchouli, incense and vanilla.

Of course, it wouldn't be a Tom Ford product if it wasn't visually appealing. Housed in a thin jet black bottled with Art Deco inspired lines, the bottle also features a hand tied gold cord around the neck and a 23k gold plated engraved name plaque. I match my fragrances with my mood, outfit and makeup so I like to wear Black Orchid when I am feeling confident and often also when I am wearing black. It goes perfectly with a bold red lip!

Tom Ford Private Blend White Musk collection.

This collection of four fragrances stems from one of the most important perfume elements: musk. "The intention was to build on the true beauty of musk, which is not at all heavy or dirty, but has a deep, compelling softness. Inhaling pure musk is a bit like inhaling nude skin," says Tom Ford. "What I discovered is that there's such a sprectrum of shades and tones withing the musk family that a single fragrance couldn't capture its character"

I tried Urban Musk, a sensous oriental fragrance created from crisp white pepper extract, cumin, white honey, jasmine sambac, black plum, Tonkin musk headspace (I had a "what the?" to this one too, it was traditionally captured from a Himilayan deer) and Laos Orpur- the finest and rarest distillation of tree resin from South East Asia.

It comes encased in an ivory box which displays the bottle proudly like a museum piece, and so has been the only fragrance box I've kept (though Black Orchid does come in a lovely gold box). The bottle itself is beautifully designed with an ivory cap and ivory label stamped in gold. While still powerful like Black Orchid, Urban Musk has a more feminine elegance, and was perfect for me to wear to the Park Hyatt today for High Tea with the girls!

Tom Ford Private Blend Lip Colour

The Tom Ford Private Blend Lip Colour range consists of 12 shades which represent Mr Ford's ideal classic lip colour "wardrobe", all of which are universally flattering. The lipsticks contain rare and exotic ingredients of soja seed extract, Brazilian murumuru butter and chamomilla flower oil, which help the lipstick to glide on. I found that unlike a lot of other lipsticks, especially with reds, these really were moisturising and non drying and provided a gorgeous shine, while also being non greasy. I don't even really need to say that the presentation is stunning. Housed in gold accented ivory cases (which have a perfect click when you close them), the lipstick itself is stamped with the TF logo. Simply divine! The beauty world also obviously agrees, as Tom Ford Private Blend Lip Colour won the prestigious Prix D'Excellence de la Beaute Award at the 2011 Prix de Marie Claire Awards held last Thursday.

On another Tom Ford related note, I recently finally got around to watching his cinematic masterpiece, A Single Man, which features many of his models and muses. I'm not one for written or spoken poetry and, with the risk of sounding super cheesy when I say this, this movie really was visual poetry. It is a work of art and so, as someone who is so aesthetically motivated, I was absolutely amazed and entranced. But then again, did I really expect any less of Mr Ford?!

Once again the incredibly talented creative forces at Illamasqua have come up with an amazing new season collection. As it was a long weekend I went back to stay with my parents, aka my "Country Retreat". Sometimes I forget how beautiful Tasmania is, and after months of sweaty packed trams and city living I'm enjoy going back to fresh air and clean water. When I was shopping on Saturday I got to pat a gorgeous baby wombat which someone was nursing and carrying around town, later in the afternoon I saw an amazing pod of dolphins- and I hadn't even been in the state for 24 hours! The next day I also someone walking their cow down the road with a stubby in their hand, not so beautiful but just as amusing.

Eat: epic spicy noodle soup

I've been so tired this week, so delivery takeaway is always a tempting option, though luckily I'd been to the supemarket on my lunch break so thought I may as well use my food while it was fresh. I ended up getting asainy ingredients, so decided to try making a Thai style noodle soup. Now this is my own receipe, so if you try it you must've done something wrong. The photo doesn't really do it justice.

Ingredients:

2cm ginger
1clove garlic
1/2 large red chilli
1/2 red onion
1/3 block firm tofu
Peanut oil
Small handful enoki mushrooms
1 heaped teaspoon panang curry paste
1/2 teaspoon tamarind puree
Coriander (I use from a tube, so used a squeeze)
170ml vegetable stock (half of one of the small packets)
1/2 lime
1 tsp fish sauce
1 heaped tsp brown sugar
1/2 serve packet flat Thai noodles

I started by cooking the tofu in a small pan in peanut oil, so I could make sure it was cooked well first and didn't get too broken up. While I was cooking, in a large pan I started cooking the ginger, garlic, chili and onion in peanut oil.

When the onion is clear, add the mushrooms, curry paste, tamarind and coriander. Stir for a minute or so on a medium heat.

Add the stock, 1/3 cup water, lime juice, fish sauce, brown sugar, tofu and noodles and boil until the noodles are cooked and the soup is hot.

That's it! Easy! Tasty! Vego!

I love Cue, and of course Dion Lee is amazing, so I was super excited when I first heard that he would be creating a collection for them- could there be a more fabulous Australian collaboration?! The line features the superb tailoring, structure and craftsmanship which Lee is well known for, combined with the beautiful, modern masstige work-style clothing from Cue. All of the pieces are amazing, but I am especially lusting after the grey and black skirt and the trench coat. Make sure you get in quick girls, this is destined to sell out fast! LMFF: Qee Designer Toy Exhibition at Chadstone

I love quirky little Japanese toys, and I love it even more when they somehow combine with fashion. As part of the upcoming L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival, Chadstone is hosting a Qee (pronounced key) Designer Toy Exhibition. 12 Australian designers, Alannah Hill, Bettina Liano (pictured Qee), Peter Alexander, Leona Edminston, Little Joe, Mimco, Sambag, Gorman, FAT, Jack London, Oroton and White Suede, were each given a lifesized Qee to personalise (I want one!) All 12 will be auctioned off, with the proceeds going towards each designer's charity of choice. I can't wait to see all of the final versions, especially Peter Alexander and Leona Edminston.

So many award show outfits seem to either be pretty, yet safe and boring, or fashion forward, yet weird and worst-dressed list worthy, but this dress for me strikes the perfect balance. Paired with simple, sleek hair, minimal accessories and simple, ladylike beauty, Cate really is both modern and fabulous. Last years favourite for me was another Givenchy couture gown, worn by Zoe Saldana, so I can't wait for next year- will the third time also be the charm?

My first experience with a Dior mascara was when I was still in school and I had gotten a mini version to try for free with a magazine. I was amazed at how good it was, and while getting ready with my friends put it on only one eye to show them my own version of before and after to prove how good it was (yes, I've been reviewing beauty products for years!)

It seems as though people named Elizabeth are skilled at writing food themed memoirs; Lunch in Paris, by Elizabeth Bard, is a lot like the eat part (my favourite section) of Eat Pray Love, by Elizabeth Gilbert, but set, obviously, in Paris. Recommended to me by my mum, I "borrowed" her copy when I came over to Melbourne. As I'm very visually orientated, I have to admit I did first fall in love with this book for it's cover, and luckily it's contents didn't disappoint. It follows American Bard's move to Paris for love, to live with her boyfriend and future husband Gwendal, and her unemployed days learning Paris one recipe at a time. My favourite part of this book? The recipes which she so mouthwateringly describes are included throughout the book- amazing! A book that nourishes the heart, mind and stomach.

Eat: Pizza pizza!

Ingredients:

3 cups plain flour, plus extra to dust
1 1/2 tsp salt
1 7g sachet dried yeast
1 tbs olive oil
4 tomatoes
small brown onion
garlic
red chilli
basil
1/4 cup red wine
6 slices pepperoni
4 slices honey leg ham
olives
6 mushrooms
mozarella

If I know I'm going to make pizza later on, I often start making the base in the morning to give it plenty of time to rise (a genius tip I picked up from someone at work). To make the dough, place the plain flour, yeast and salt in a bowl and mix together. Make a well in the centre and add 1 1/4 cups lukewarm water and the olive oil. Mix together and then turn onto a clean, floured surface and knead the dough until it's nice and smooth. Wash out the mixing bowl, dry and grease slightly with oil. Place the dough back and cover with a damp tea towel and then a dry tea towel and leave to rise.

The tomato base can be made earlier as well, so this pizza is perfect if you have people coming over as you can do most of the preparation beforehand. Wash and quarter the tomatos, place on a baking tray greased with olive oil and sprinkled a bit of salt. Also add half a chopped onion, chopped chilli (only if you like a bit of bite) and as many garlic cloves as you like (I often use almost a whole bulb of garlic and it's not too overpowering). Bake until everything is starting to look cooked and soft, but not too black. Leave to cool down and then blend in batches. Add in fresh basil and red wine in the blender. This is such an easy, tasty sauce to make and I use it for bolognaise as well.

When the dough has risen, halve and roll out each half on a floured surface. Grease a pizza tray (I use a tray rather than a stone because I didn't bring my car over to Melbourne and I can't be botered lugging a pizza stone on the tram with me) and strech out one of the bases on the tray. Lightly brush with olive oil and then sprinkle with flour. Add half of the pizza sauce for each pizza (this receipe makes enough dough and sauce for 2), and top with chopped ingredients as listed above, or whatever you like! Yum!

Beauty trend: Orange Burst

I am loving bright orange at the moment in both fashion and beauty. I really want a statement orange bag (a birkin in a classic Hermes orange would do perfectly) and dress. I also love orange makeup at the moment, and have wanted to work a bright statement lip since seeing one of the looks in Rae Morris' first book. Finally last week I headed down to the Illamasqua counter at Myer Melbourne and picked myself out a gorgeous shade called Blaze. I couldn't decide between a pink or orange, as I love bright pinks too, so one of the helpful Illamasqua team members suggested I pick that lipstick and a bright pink sheer lipgloss in Divine (both picturd below)- so I did. When I wore it to work the next day someone else had a similar shade, and two others had bright orange nails- trend indeed. Don't be scared to give bright lipsticks a try. If you're not sure what shade will suit you, go visit a beauty counter and ask!

Watch and Listen: 30 Seconds to Mars - Hurricane

I've always quite liked Jared Leto and his band 30 Seconds to Mars, and after seeing them play last year I became obsessed. Hurricane is my favourite song of theirs, and the other night I decided to check out if they had a video clip for the song yet. First of all I found 30 second teasers for the video- that's right, their music videos are so good they have trailers for them. When I found the 13 minute, uncensored version I was absolutely amazed. This is without a doubt the best music video I have ever seen. Warning though, this is NSFW and contains some graphic images- so if you're sensitive and get offended easily look away!

Visit: Melbourne Aquarium

Since moving to Melbourne a year ago I had been meaning to visit the aquarium and after seeing the tv ad for the baby hammerhead sharks I finally got my act together to go.

Upon entering the aquarium I waited behind a group having their photo taken. When the photo was over I realised it was for souveniers at the end and as I was visiting the aquarium by myself (no-one would go with me!) I quickly rushed by, laughing a "no thanks" to the employee taking the pictures. I may have been more than happy to go by myself, but I didn't need a picture of it!

First up were the adorable penguins. I spent the most time at this exhibit and loved watching them waddling up their ice hill, sliding gracefull into the water and then suddenly leaping back out. All of the other sections were equally amazing, from the entrancing jellyfish to the other worldly swordfish and all in between, it really did remind me how there is a whole other world under the water. My favourite part is the coral atoll tank which is filled with a myriad of colours and tropical fish, and best of all a green sea turtle which is one of the mot beautiful creatures I've ever seen.

While you may not find a random hot guy to start talking to, like in aquarium visits at the movies, (well actually you never know, this just didn't work for me), I highly recommend a visit. My advice: avoid peak times if you can (or be prepared to face a plague of children, pram wielding mothers and bumbling dads armed with backpacks) and also take your time to read the information and watch each amazing creature!

Eat: Zucchini and Brocolli Soup

Yes, I know it's meant to be summer here lately but the weather has been all over the place so a nice, warming soup hasn't seemed out of place. I love to make soups on the weekend for easy week day dinners or work lunches (though if you take to work make sure you put in a good container, I also wrap clingwrap around mine to avoid spillage). Where possible, I like to use organic ingredients. This is my own recipe, so if you try it let me know what you think!

Ingredients:

50g Butter
1 large brown onion
4 garlic cloves
1L Chicken stock
1 medium potato
3 zucchini
1 head of brocolli
Cream and salt, to taste

Melt the butter and garlic together in a large saucepan, then add the chopped onion. Cook on a low heat so it cooks nicely and doesn't burn.
When the onion is cooked and clear, add in the stock. I like to use chicken rather than vegetable as I prefer the taste, but it's up to you. I'm also lazy and buy premade stock. Add the chopped potato, zucchini and brocolli.
When the vegetables are cooked, remove from heat and let cool.
It's important that the soup is completely cool. I used to get impatient with this when I was making soups and ended up with scaled hands and splattered hands when the lid burst off! So, when it's completely cool blend in batches then return to the pan.
Return the blended soup to the pan to reheat. Add cream and salt to taste. I did add cream, but it doesn't really need it.
Serve with a hot, crunchy and buttery bread roll. Yum!

I was given a chance to try the products used recently and I absolutely love them. My hair is naturally very straight, which can be good, but can be so hard to style (as the frustrated hairdresser who did my look for a hair competition once discovered!), but these products are perfect!

Sebastian lead stylist, Martin Samuel, shares how to find your own inner Burlesque minx at home.

For a casual to sexy look, like Christina Aguilera's character Ali:

1. Start with dry hair and use Sebastian Professional Shine Define, $31, with a small conical curling tong to spiral set the hair.

2. Repeat on each section while alternating the direction of the barrel until entire head is curled.

3. Use a wide tooth comb or your fingers to brush through each section and reveal a light ethereal texture for the volume of the look desired.

For soft and subtle waves like Cher's Tess:

Summer Essentials: Beauty

Everyone knows by now that while having a gorgeous summer tan can make you feel healthier and more confident, faking is definitely the way to go. Pre-beach and summer parties, apply Rodial Brazilian Tan. The colour develops in four hours and dries in one minute for a streak free application. Beauty Spotlight: Bobbi Brown Cosmetics

The Bobbi Brown makeup philosophy is not to mask the face and hide under a thick layer of makeup, but to use it to create a natural look, emphasising a woman's unique beauty. The range fits in perfectly with this ideology, with products that are smooth and easy to use, in timeless hues.

Bobbi Brown's makeup journey began as it does for most women (and some men too), by watching her mother apply makeup when she was young. As soon as she was able to work, Bobbi began training at a local cosmetics store, before continuing on to more formal training at Boston's Emerson College where she gained a B.F.A in Theatrical Makeup.

When her studies were complete, she moved to New York to work as a professional makeup artist, where she worked her way up through harkwork and perseverance. Her first big break came from an American Vogue cover, shot by Patrick Demarchelier and featuring Naomi Campbell.

Bobbi found that the current products she used were too artificial, making it hard to create the natural, healthy look she preferred. From this frustration, the calling for her own range was born. Her first lipstick (which Bobbi Brown is now famous for) was created after a meeting with a chemist at a photoshoot, to whom she described her ideal lipstick which they then created. Nine additional shades later, Bobbi Brown's lipstick line debuted at Bergdorf Goodman, in 1991, with forecasted sales of 100 units a month. She sold 100 in the first day.

Word spread quickly and the range gradually expanded, evolving from neutrals to also include bold and bright colours. In 1995, Bobbi Brown Cosmetics was bought by Estée Lauder, with Bobbi still in creative control of the brand.

Today, she also continues to create runway looks at New York Fashion Week for designers such as J.Mendel, Erin Fetherson, Rachel Roy and Tory Burch. She has also written five beauty and lifestyle books (does this woman ever sleep?!) titled Bobbi Brown Beauty, Bobbi Brown Teenage Beauty, Bobbi Brown Beauty Evolution, Bobbi Brown Living Beauty, Bobbi Brown Makeup Manual and Bobbi Brown Beauty Rules.

In additional to all of this, Bobbi Brown Cosmetics also supports organisations such as Dress for Success and Jane Addams Vocational High School.

Product Review:

Bobbi Brown Long-wear Gel Eyeliner.
I've worked a cat eye for years now and it's often something I get comments on. I've always used a liquid eyeliner but recently decided to give gel eyeliner a try. Having done cat eye flicks for so long, I've mastered the technique, but I can easily see how gel eyeliner and a brush glides on easier, and is a lot more forgiving for those who are first trying the look.
Bobbi Brown's gel eyeliner really lives up to it's name of being long-wearing and it's waterproof too. It creates a sharp, clean line but also manages to blend in and avoid the "I've just used permanent marker on my eyes look (I knew a girl who did this).
The Black Ink shade is my favourite, but it's also available in a range of different colours, for those who want to experiment and get creative. Use with Bobbi Brown's Ultra Fine Eyeline Brush for fantastic feline results!

Bobbi Brown Pot Rogue for Lips and Cheeks.
As the name implies, this like multi-tasking wonder can be used for both lips and cheeks. I'm loving bright lips this summer and the Cabo Coral shade is a perfect on-trend colour, without overdoing it.
To use on cheeks, apply over either moisturized skin or a cream foundation only. If you still wish to use powder, apply it over the top to give a "glowing from within" look.

Bobbi Brown Cleansing Oil.
The first thing I noticed about this product is it's beautiful smell; while smelling like a professional grade product it also has gorgeous natural aromas. It removes makeup effectively and easily but doesn't strip the skin of it's natural oils, which alcohol-based products can do. It contains olive and jojoba oils to condition and soften the skin and ginger root extract to soothe and calm.

The Modern Fabulous guide to surviving the Boxing Day sales

Christmas is over once again and its time to make way for the new holiday tradition- the boxing day sales.

Having spent a lot of my working life in retail, I personally couldn't think of a worse way to spend one of my precious holiday days. If you are one of those bargain hunters who awaits the early morning rise and call of the sales, then here are some Modern Fabulous ways to navigate the shopping rush.

1. If the shoe doesn't fit - don't buy it.
This classic shopping rule doesn't only apply to ill fitting footwear. Sure there's a huge line for the change room, you're tired from getting up so early and you're still full from yesterday's turkey but if you take the item home and it doesn't fit properly- you're not going to wear it and it's going to spend it's depressing and lonely days at the back of your cupboard. Not a bargain. Yes- even if it's only $10.

2. Don't buy crap.
Once again- not a bargain. While you may not be physically able to try some items on, you can still figure out if there is a use for them. My dad always falls for the trap of the sales. Once he brought home about 10 cans of tinned curry soup (yuck) because they were on sale and is constantly bringing home multiples of random and useless product for the same reason.

3. Choose your bargains wisely.
On any given day of the year, it is most likely a major retailer is having a sale. Boxing day and end of season sales are the perfect times to pick up serious reductions on clearance stock. Christmas items are of course the most obvious one here. Wrapping paper, cards and servingware are all great buys- if you can remember them for next year of course. Decorations are also good, if you really need more (note to self- need to stop buying deer and bird ornaments, I don't live in a forest). Summer clothing is also another good one- if you follow rule one and if is something that will still look good next year, such as a timeless sundress or denim shorts.

4. Put those gift cards to work.
Gift gifts are an increasingly popular gift, and during the sales is a perfect time to spend them. Also, try not to put them towards something practical. When I receive gift cards I like to buy something presenty for myself, that I may not normally buy. Come on people, it's a present not a hand out.

5. Don't ride the Christmas buzz.
I am one of those people who goes nuts for Christmas (this currently means classy decorations in my house, cute candy cane earrings and homemade gingerbread men for my workmates, though I'm hoping that when I'm older that this doesn't manifest into flashing tinsel brooches and rocking backwards on the tram singing deck the halls). Therefore, I know for me that it's almost impossible to spend wisely and budget during this time, though for my lucky mum this means beautifully wrapped presents from Tiffany and Co, so thank goodness I don't own a credit card. So for those of you who are like me, there's probably not that much left in the bank anyway and for all of you swipers out there- remember the huge bill that will be coming.

6. Don't turn into the grinch.
People can be especially pushy during sales, and most people are still worn out from all of the recent festivities, however this is not an excuse for rudeness towards sales people (which I have unfortunately experienced too much, but fortunately don't have to anymore). They're having to give up their holiday and family time to come and serve you, and are probably just as tired as you, so be prepared to wait and to remember that it doesn't hurt to smile. Though if you spot another shopper about to pick up the last 50% off Givenchy bag- its on!

7. If all else fails...
Enjoy the sleep in, carry on the family celebrations, stuff yourself with more food and enjoy the presents you've just been given. This is what I plan to do :)

Apologies everyone, November was a busy month for me and my poor little Modern Fabulous didn’t get much love. November saw me turning 23 and heading back for a nice relaxing break with family and friends in Tasmania (along with dinners out and sleepovers with pizza, lollies, 90s horror movies and wine of course), going on a road trip with friends down to gorgeous Lorne in Victoria the following weekend and then flying off to Manly to stay with my beautiful cousin and hang out with Layne Beachley (ok, so maybe I only just saw her at the beach…) the following weekend.

Now it’s the start of December and for most Australians this means the start of summer, but for me- this marks the start of the Christmas season (it doesn’t seem like we’re having much of a summer here anyway in rainy Melbourne). My Christmas season kicked off with a beautiful work lunch at MoVida (amazing, amazing tapas- everyone in Melbourne must go there) and then later on dinner and movies at Crown, with the fabulous Christmas display which really started getting me excited for the holidays. I smugly have pretty much all of my Christmas shopping done (save for a few little extras), but for all of you last-minuters I have some personality themed posts gift ideas coming up.

New in the cosmetics bag

1. Voyage d'Hermes EDT 100ml. As previously mentioned in my fragrance post, this is a fresh and distinct unisex fragrance which I adore. The bottle is absolutely stunning, and is definitely one I love to display. It smells fresh and invigorating, though calming at the same time.

2. Aēsop Resurrection Aromatique Hand Balm 75ml. Aēsop is a beautiful Melbourne brand (which is as old as me!), and their amazing hand cream is no exception. I have quite sensitive skin, which is the worst on my hands, so I need creams that are gentle, soothing and nourishing and this plant based balm works perfectly. It also has an amazing lingering smell which makes me want to keep smelling my hands, though I avoid this as I don't want to look like a creep on the tram to work!

3. Dior Diorliner. I have been rocking the cat eye flick for so long that it's becoming a bit of a trademark of mine. It can be quite hard to master, and I often get a few comments. I've only recently discovered Diorliner, and it is something I would recommend to anyone who finds it hard to get this look right. The brush is so fine and like a paint brush which makes it so much easier. It also lasts for ages, so you don't end up with a blurry smudge above your eyes at the end of the day.

4. Kiehls Lip Balm #1. Another cult beauty buy I had been meaning to try for ages, and I can see why it is labelled #1. A lightweight formula that soothes lips without being greasy and sitting on the surface. Love!

Summer Scents

There have been so many huge fragrance launches recently that it’s been a bit hard to keep track. Here are my picks for both men and women.

For men:

Boss Bottled Night: When I first saw the ad for this, staring previously featured man of the day and lucky Scarlett’s hubby Ryan Reynolds, I was hooked. It's a seductive and sophisticated male scent.

Biotherm Force: The first male fragrance from men's skincare giant Biotherm. The smell is inspired by the union of physical and mental force, featuring top notes of fresh citrus, woody undertones as well as neroli, cardamom, absinth and patchouli.

For women:

Gucci Guilty: This fragrance is super hot. When I first smelt this one, all of my co-workers and I were addicted, and still haven’t stopped talking about it.

Fendi Fan di Fendi: This is definitely one for women who love to collect perfume bottles and display them beautifully in their boudoir. It’s a vibrant, sensual and addictive radiant floral fragrance with a leather base. Why is it called Fan di Fendi? Because you will be a fan of it, of course.

And for both:

Voyage d’Hermes: Don’t be fooled into thinking that this unisex fragrance is a boring one-smell suits-all. It’s a distinctly unique scent packaged in a gorgeously designed bottle. The top of my list for my next fragrance purchase!

New favourite: HuTong Dumpling Bar

I was recently introduced to HuTong Dumpling Bar, in Market Lane, for one of my friend’s birthdays, and once I find a great place I tend to go back and back. This place is no exception and I have already been back twice since first going at the start of October.

It’s made up of three different levels, the third is my favourite, and obviously everyone else loves it too because it seems impossible to get in without a booking.

Recently I blogged about how macaroons were the new cupcake- and now dumplings seem to be the next big food trend. Suddenly everyone seems to be going out for dumplings and cocktails (+ girlfriends is the best combination) and talking about different dumpling places.

My pick (which is pretty much everything I’ve tried so far)- Shao-Long Bao (dumplings with soup in them which need to be eaten in one go or you will get the liquid all over your face, as I discovered), Shanghai pan-fried dumplings, assorted vegetables, honey chicken and dry chicken and chilli if you like things spicy!
